Coorg, also known as Kodagu, is the smallest district of Karnataka, located midway between Mysore and Mangalore. It is a beautiful region of rolling hills, evergreen rainforests, and coffee and spice plantations. The district is famous for its scenic beauty, pleasant weather from September to March, and heavy rainfall during the monsoons. Coorg is home to the fiercely independent Kodava people, who are believed to be of Greek or Arabic descent, with a rich culture reflected in their martial traditions, marriage, and religious practices. The Kodavas are known for their hospitality and bravery, with the Coorg Regiment being one of the most decorated in the Indian Army. General Cariappa, the first Chief of the Indian Army, was a Coorgi. The Kodavas are uniquely allowed to carry firearms without a license. The Kaveri River, originating in Coorg’s hills, supports abundant wildlife, including fish, birds, and mammals.
